How is modern real-time collaboration different from Google Wave?
Modern tools like Taskade learned from Wave's mistakes by combining real-time collaboration with clear structure β€” task lists, project boards, mind maps, and video chat in one workspace without the complexity overload. They focus on specific workflows (project management, team communication, knowledge sharing) rather than trying to reinvent email, chat, and wikis all at once.

What was Google Wave and why did it fail?
Google Wave was a real-time collaboration platform unveiled at Google I/O 2009 that combined email, instant messaging, wiki editing, and social networking into a single unified workspace. It failed due to lack of product focus (tried to be everything at once), poor positioning (users didn't understand what it was for), a confusing invite-only rollout that fragmented the user base, and performance issues that made the experience frustrating.

Did any of Google Wave's features survive in other products?
Yes. Google Wave's core technology β€” the Operational Transformation (OT) protocol for real-time concurrent editing β€” lives on in Google Docs, Google Slides, and many modern collaboration tools. Wave's threaded conversation model influenced products like Slack and Quip. Google eventually open-sourced Wave's protocol as Apache Wave, and its DNA can be found in virtually every real-time collaborative editor today.

5 April 2020 - Google themselves hyped it up, yeah, but you're right, they didn't know what they would do with it as a standalone product. It didn't have the potential to do any of those things. Email, instant messaging, forums, chat rooms, those all have their place in the world, they're great at what they do, and for most use cases none of them would be improved by real-time broadcast of every key stroke. Wave is great for collaborative editing of documents, and to act as a shared whiteboard for meetings, and the underlying tech has been put into use for those things.
